Maddi Turns 7

Things were a little more low key this year for Maddi's birthday, or at least it felt that way.  It might just be that I'm getting better with craziness of birthdays.  :)

The festivities started the night before with making treats for her school class.  We did dipped oreos with sprinkles.  The girls had fun making them.

The day of Maddi's birthday was "dress up like your favorite character" day at school.  She, of course, chose Fancy Nancy.  Here she is in all her fancy glory before school.

That night we opened presents and then had some friends over for cake and ice cream the next day.
She looks so old to me in this picture.  She is growing up way too fast.

Brynnley was SO excited to give her this game!

A new bike!
We didn't really have a theme this year for her birthday, but she wanted a ballet cake.  I couldn't really find one I liked so we decided on this ruffle cake.  The cake platter was supposed to look more like a tutu, but I dropped the ball there.  I swore I had more pink tulle, but I didn't so we made do with what we had.
This was my first time making my own Buttercream frosting, which turns out to be super easy.  I will always make my own frosting now.  I made a cream cheese one for the filling in between layers and it was delicious.  The decorating one I didn't love the taste though, because I used shortening with it.  That's supposed to make it better to decorate with, but I'm going to play with less shortening and more butter for better flavor on my next cake.  The piping really wasn't all that hard, but I definitely would love to have a turntable, and to have a cake board the size of the cake so its easier to work at the bottom of the cake.  My ruffles certainly aren't perfect and they didn't turn out completely as planned.  I also could have done a little better with the ombre effect, but overall I was really pleased with the cake.  :)

Apparently I didn't get any pictures of our friends once they were over, but Jacque came up for the party too.  Its always great to have at least some family there.  :)  Thanks Jacque!
