It has been a while since I have used a chore chart, in fact, I don't think Brynnley has ever had one. It has been past due for quite some time now though. I have been doing a better job of keeping up with the house and have finally been getting to many organization projects. With this progress, has come the need for the kids to be a little more responsible for their own responsibilities. As funny as it may seem, I actually decided to finally make this chart after our trip to the dentist. Maddi has a set routine for school in the morning and her teeth always get brushed then. Brynnley is hit and miss, and bedtime, well....our bedtime routine has always been less than desirable.
With 3 kids I have had to admit that I just can't do everything anymore. Unbelievable, I know. But, take my word for it. I continue to hold out hope that my brain and memory abilities will come back to me eventually. So, I decided that I needed something that would not only encourage "chores" being done, but would help the kids remember things like brushing their teeth. :) And thus our chore chart (although I think responsibility is a much better term than chore) was born.
I got the idea off of Pinterest, but dressed mine up a bit. And, I let the girls have fun with stickers to embellish the top. They both have brush teeth (this flap is split into two, one for morning and night), make your bed, do a chore (I pick and it changes each day), and pick up toys. Maddi has do homework, and Brynnley has get dressed.
This is how it works: Each day that they cover up all their responsibilities they get a star. They can then turn their stars in for a reward card. Then they keep the card till they want to redeem it. So far it has been working pretty well. They have each earned at least one reward card. Maddi's first one was to stay up for an extra 15 minutes. She was so excited to use it! Somedays we don't really stick with the chart, but I will give them a star if they are good helpers. Other days we have too busy of a schedule and so we just skip the whole chart thing. :) It has helped a lot. It even just helps me to remember to give the kids a task for the day. And, they do remember things better on their own now. In fact, Brynnley made her bed all by herself without being asked today! Its hard to say how long this will last, but even once we need to change up the chart, I think the cards & stars will come in handy for lots of other things!
